Building a Happier New Year
"You'll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine."
I'm not one for resolutions, but every now and then I like to make reachable goals for myself. Below are a few ambitions I made for myself at the beginning of 2017. Some of these I do everyday while others I'm still working on...I'm only human, right?
I Stopped Drinking
The end of 2016 brought me a visit to the hospital with a bad gal bladder and acute pancreatitis. A pain that I wouldn't wish on anyone! I wanted to give my body a break, so I decided to stop drinking cold turkey. I thought leaving my precious red wine bottled up would be a lot harder, but the rewards out weigh the risks.
A few perks of not drinking: My skin is brighter, I sleep better, my stomach is flatter, my mornings are easier and I feel a lot better.
I Learned to Say 'No'
Don't say maybe if you want to say no - Paulo Coelho
I just really love Paulo Coelho! The man has a way with words. I found this quote on Pinterest last year and it really stuck with me. It took me a while to realize that there is nothing wrong with saying no. I used to find myself committing to way too much and doing things that I just didn't want to do. Where did this lead me? Stressed the heck out!
I still love saying yes, but if there is a task, plan, or social gathering that I don't have time for or I don't want to do, I just simply say no. My life is a lot less cluttered from doing so.
I Put Down my Cell Phone More Often
This one is easy...just put it down and enjoy the simple pleasures around you. Here's a tip: Try putting your cell phone down 30 minutes before you go to bed and don't pick it up within 15 minutes of waking up. The break is quite nice.
I Got Out of my Comfort Zone
I'm a bit of a home body and I blame this mostly on my crohn's disease. Having crohn's can be quite challenging when you travel. Camping in the woods? Yikes! Sharing a bathroom with another couple? That's my nightmare. You just never know when the "moment" will hit.
Nothing like 3 week road trip to help you get over your chronie fears!
I Put Myself on a Morning Routine
I'm not a morning person, but I find myself wanting to be. One thing that has helped me is to set my alarm for the same time every morning. I won't lie, sometimes I fail, but I've also had lots of success. I've grown to love my mornings and quiet time with my coffee.
I Make the Bed Every Morning
I feel like I've accomplished a great task every morning when I make the bed. My day doesn't feel as messy and I'm more prepared. It's such a simple task, but very rewarding.
I Declutter my Email
I'm talking about unsubscribing from all those emails you never read. This does take a while, but it feels so good! Free the clutter and free your mind!
I plan on taking these ambitions with me into 2018 and adding on a few more. I'm all for realistic goals that help better my life and aren't going to let me down when I don't reach them. What are some of your goals for 2018? Let me know in the comments below.
Happy New Year!
With love - James
